A visit to Ascoli Piceno

Who’d have thought it – bright sunshine again! In the morning a visit from our neighbour Rita with a basket of eggs and she also asks if we had found a bottle of their wine they had left in the outbuilding for us (we hadn’t). She and Giovanni are so generous and welcoming and I have eaten with them often when I am here on my own progress chasing. I mention Saturday’s sheep to Rita, expecting that she would know where they were from, but she tells me they would have been itinerants and if we hadn’t been there the sheep would probably have eaten their way through our garden!
In the afternoon we finally make it to Ascoli and just enjoy strolling through the streets and eating ice cream in the beautiful Piazza del Popolo.
In the evening we have a barbecue – in April! We’ve been having breakfast and lunch outside but the evening is a bit fresh for sitting out so we station the barbecue outside the kitchen door and eat at the dining table. Before and after dinner the kids all watch the DVD of Roman Holiday (it’s in black and white, dad!) as our friends are off to Rome in the morning.
